Volunteering days are now in full swing at the Queens County Farm and many high-energy gardening fans of all ages are gathering there. Many of them residing in Queens, volunteers contribute their muscles & manual labor for 2-3 hours of working in the fields to do tasks including weeding and picking veggies and fruit...
To know that you personally contributed to getting the fruit and veggies out of the dirt and onto the farm stand for sales to your neighbors is just wonderful.
Many people are not physically able to get rough and tough and on the ground to garden! So if you are able and live in Queens, NY, or near your own local farm, I totally support volunteering for a day to feel that amazing feeling like I got today. Knowing I contributed with my own hard labor for the good of the entire community is a wonderful feeling.
I plan to head back again to the Queens County Farm for a few more morning sessions of toil and hard work because of the rewarding work it is.
Plus, gardening is good exercise. When all the gyms are closed, the volunteers were talking today about how they also loved the workout that volunteering at the farm provides.
Today, Tuesday, August 11th from 10am-12pm, we weeded a lot and picked the onions (a smaller variety of bunched onions) that lay in the dirt underneath the weeds that grew on top of them.
Here are some fun videos and photos of my volunteer experience in the field. All volunteers were fit, very capable, of all ages, and wore their masks for the majority of the time that we worked together in the hot sun! We did great !
