With the Summer season underway and the scorching heat it brings, it only makes sense that we should all reach for a refreshing alcoholic drink and relax a little bit. That being said, let's take a look at my top five favorite brands that will refresh you; but will NOT undo all the other healthy choices you have been making this season. The options I am reviewing are far lighter than those high cal 500-900 cal frozen drinks. I'm not even looking at wines or beer. Instead, I am going to present you with the newest options in the market - Sparkling Cocktails and Spiked Seltzers. Every one of the following brands include drinks that are under 150 calories a pop. As well, they are so simple to prepare! Just pull a cold one out of the fridge and sip away! How convenient!
1. Cape Line Sparkling Cocktails (Capeline.com)
Cape Line Cocktails come in the following 4 flavors: Margarita, White Peach Sangria, Hard Strawberry Lemonade & Blackberry Mojito. I love these drinks because they have only 6 all natural ingredients and 120 calories per 12oz can (4.5% alc/vol). The alcohol comes from fermented real cane sugar. The margarita flavor is my favorite because it looks and tastes exactly as a margarita should! I forgot it was a "light" margarita because the flavor is full of zest and there is the quintessential margarita lime juice in it.
2. Truly Hard Seltzers (https://trulyhardseltzer.com/)
Truly Hard Seltzers made their debut in 2016, early and conveniently, to retailers in the NYC Tri-State area. Back in 2016, spiked seltzers were a revolutionary idea to the beverage market. Now it's 2020 and we see this brand everywhere from supermarkets to convenience stores. It's one of the first brands I have ever tried and has now expanded it's offerings to include THIRTEEN flavors (Black Cherry, Wild Berry, Blueberry & Acai, Raspberry Lime, Orange, Lime, Grapefruit, Lemon, Passion Fruit, Pomegranate, Pineapple, Mango, Rosé), all 100 calories per can, all natural, 1g of sugar and 5% alc/vol. With 1g of sugar, this drink would support Keto dieters. The alcohol comes from fermented real cane sugar. My favorite flavors are Raspberry Lime and Mango. oh - P.S. - Truly has also recently come out with a line of 100cal spiked lemonades so try those too!
3. White Claw Hard Seltzer (www.whiteclaw.com)
White Claw Hard Seltzers are very comparable to Truly Hard Seltzers. They also contain 100 calories per 12oz can and 5% alc/vol. One difference between the two brands is White Claw's 2g of sugar (which is still VERY low) compared to Truly's 1g per can. I have to tell you though, there's little difference in 1g to 2g sugar! Think about it: a glass of sweet wine like rosé can have between 35 and 120 grams of sugar per glass! White Claw includes 8 distinct flavors and is now marketing an even lower calorie option! If you truly feel that 100 calories is still too much for you, try the White Claw Hard Seltzer 70. With only 70 calories and a little less alcohol content at 3.7 alc/vol, even the most stringent calorie-counter will be satisfied with the two flavors offered: Pineapple & Clementine. The alcohol comes from fermented sugars.
4. Smirnoff Seltzer (Smirnoff.com)
Smirnoff, previously popular for its vodkas and malted "Smirnoff Ice" beverages which contain approx 200 cal and 6.5 teaspoons of sugar, has also decided to break into the spiked seltzer market. And with only 90 calories and 4.5% alc/vol and a very tasty palate of flavors, I suggest you buy a pack today. Flavors are more exotic than both Truly and White Claw, including 4 rosé flavors (raspberry, strawberries, white peach and pink apple), all zero sugar. The other spiked seltzer flavors are piña colada, berry lemonade, and cranberry lime. And new to the line are two flavors that include a higher 8% alc/vol if you really want to have some fun: blackberry and blood orange. And speaking of fun, there's a limited edition seasonal Red White & Berry flavor that comes in a color changing can! As far as I am concerned, you cannot go wrong with a Smirnoff Seltzer!
5. Corona Hard Seltzer (coronausa.com)
We are currently in a pandemic and being told to take precautions against corona the virus, but Corona Hard Seltzer is a perfectly safe and healthy drink. So let us not confuse the virus with the drink...and please stay safe, wash your hands, and wear a mask when in public spaces!
So even Corona, originally known for its beer, got in on the spiked seltzer hype. Like Smirnoff, these cans come in at 90 calories and 4.5% alc/vol. They come in 4 "beach vibe" flavors as their website calls them: Tropical Lime, Mango, Cherry and Blackberry Lime. Being that Corona Extra contains 148 calories per 12 oz bottle, I highly recommend you check out these Corona Hard Seltzers for huge calorie savings.
If you want to jazz up any of the above spiked seltzer and cocktail options, try adding some lime or lemon slices, fruit, frozen fruit, or even stevia to add more sweetness and flair to your drink!
Now that we are home more often during the pandemic, I am sure you could find time to pull a cold one out of the fridge & enjoy during the hottest time of the year!
